Music really came of age in the 60's, with bands such as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones pushing the boundaries of modern music. The production skills of George Martin on the Beatles sound was legendary. Along with the melodies and lyrics of Lennon and McCartney they were sure to be on to a winner.
The 70's was another great era for music with the disco sound coming along. Bands such as the Bee Gees and Earth Wind and Fire writing and producing some classic tunes.
At the end of the 70's and into the early 80's you had Abba. Arguably the most musically accomplished band of all time. Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus are legends in the world of popular music.
The 80's saw the arrival of the new romantic movement with bands such as Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet.
On the other side of the pond you had the street music of the ghetto and the emergence of Rap Music. Rap music is still very much alive today with Rappers such as Ludacris making it big.
The whole culture of music has changed in today's world. No longer do you have to go to a record store and buy the latest releases, you can simply download them of the internet. Ludacris Music videos are available to watch on sites such as You Tube and Yahoo music. You do not have to leave the comfort of your PC to be able the have your finger on the pulse of today's music.

I'd argue that music came of age with Jazz. Jazz lead to rock and roll, and to funk, which lead to disco and hip hop.
The Beatles and Stones were just a side effect of rock and roll. Disco was an even smaller side effect of funk.
You seem only to be considering popular music in Europe. Consider the black music that lead to all the things you talk about, and that was so popular so long before it was played by white people. I'd put Isaac Hayes above ABBA any day.
I just stumbled across this whilst strolling through the web; this is the most piss poor piece on music history I have ever read.
Naming popular bands from a few decades does not constitute "The Changing Face Of Music"
Sorry is this ironic?
You're a techno artist and you haven't mentioned dub or jamaican dance hall culture... without which there would be not techno, no house and probably no DJs.
